Who was Saint Nicholas? Why do People Celebrate him December 6th?

Saint Nicholas is the main "gift giver" in many places of the world.
His feast day is Dec.6th; the main day he gives gifts. Small treats are left in shoes or stockings for the children. Children in Europe are often interviewed to see if they are following the Saint's good example on his birthday.
the original Saint Nicholas was born in Patara, Turkey to wealthy parents. Unfortunately, they died when Saint Nicholas was a mere boy. He decided to follow taht Christian rule:"sell what you own and give it to the poor". He gave to all sorts of people in need who were ill, needy, and suffering.
He developed a reputation for giving in the region...He was made Bishop of Myra.
the Roman Emperor Diocletian exiled and imprisoned Saint Nicholas.
What do you make of Saint Nicholas?

You know I grew up with St Nick - he is the original Santaclaus. I don't do Christmas until after Dec 6th.

Hi Nat. I like the St. Nick history, and when it comes time for me to tell my son the truth about "Santa", I will tell him that we keep the goodness of this real Saint alive, as well as focus as we always have on Christ and His gift at Christmas time. Some folks don't like the idea of lying to children about a fictional character, but the way I see it, St. Nick was a real man, which is what the character was based on, and he was living his Christian faith to the fullest. God Bless you Nat- you and your family have a beautiful and Blessed Christmas!
